The use of naval aviation insignia is a modern form of heraldry that dates back to the early period of naval aviation in the 1920’s and captures many proud moments of its history. The practice fosters a sense of pride, unit cohesion and contributes to high morale, esprit de corps and professionalism within the community. It also serves as an effective means of preserving a command’s tradition, continuity of purpose and recognition, as traced through its lineage. The following rules are provided to ensure that all command insignia and slogans are in keeping with the highest traditions of the proud naval aviation heritage. HSC-3 was established on the 1st of April 2005, and is the redefinition for HC-3. HC-3 was established on 01 September 1967 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Imperial Beach. At that time, HC-3 was the only West Coast VERTREP squadron. Operating from Combat Logistics Force (CLF) ships, HC-3 detachments transferred critical supplies to forward deployed ships via helicopter, affording maximum mobility to Battle Groups. In July 1973, HC-3 moved to its present location aboard NAS North Island. The first MH-60S students completed training on 26 April 2002, and HC-3 graduated the final H-46 pilots in the fall of 2002. HSC-3 administers a number of programs in addition to providing highly trained pilots and aircrew to the Fleet. As the Model Manager for the Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) for the MH-60S, HSC-3 evaluates the NATOPS programs of each West Coast HSC squadron annually. HSC-3 instructors also train all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers (HCOs) and Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSEs). The squadron also serves as the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Search and Rescue (SAR) Model Manager, establishes the training and equipment requirements for all SAR operations in the U.S. Navy. The hallmark of HSC-3’s success is its dedication to safety and mission accomplishment. Since 1974, the Command has been awarded ten CNO Safety Awards and seven Commander Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet Battle Efficiency awards. HSC-3 will continue to produce the finest pilots and aircrew in the world, able to operate the MH-60S Nighthawk helicopter successfully
